false god
Unworthy worship target
A false god is a deity or object of worship considered illegitimate—either because the speaker believes no such god exists, or because it violates religious law to worship it.
The term reflects the perspective of the accuser: The prophets condemned the false gods of neighboring tribes.
Extended to anything given undue reverence: Money has become a false god in modern life.
