false flagging

Faking the source

False flagging is the act of carrying out an attack, operation, or deceptive action while disguising it to appear as though another party is responsible.

The term comes from naval warfare, where ships would fly a false flag to deceive enemies before engaging.

In modern use, it extends to any situation where blame is deliberately misdirected: Critics accused the government of false flagging the incident to justify military intervention.

Online, false flagging also refers to abusing platform reporting systems to get content removed by filing dishonest complaints.
