faith and doubt
Certainty and uncertainty
Faith and doubt are often treated as opposites, but they work together in most human experience.
Faith is belief or trust, especially without conclusive proof—in a deity, a person, an outcome: I have faith it will work out.
Doubt is uncertainty or questioning: I doubt he's telling the truth.
Religious traditions treat faith as a virtue and doubt as a challenge to it, yet many believers describe doubt as integral to deepening faith.
Faith and doubt as a phrase usually appears in theological or philosophical discussions about how conviction coexists with uncertainty.
