extermination camps

Systematic murder facilities

Extermination camps were Nazi facilities designed specifically for mass murder, primarily of Jews, during World War II.

Unlike concentration camps, which exploited prisoners for labor, extermination camps existed solely to kill—most victims were gassed within hours of arrival.

The six main camps (Auschwitz-Birkenau, Treblinka, Sobibor, Chełmno, Bełżec, Majdanek) killed an estimated three million people.

The term now applies to any facility built for systematic genocide.
