end-around
Lateral handoff play
An end-around is a football play where a receiver or back runs laterally behind the line of scrimmage to take a handoff, then attempts to advance around the end of the offensive line.
The term extends figuratively to describe any maneuver that bypasses normal channels or obstacles to achieve a goal: The governor tried an end-around to avoid legislative approval.
This figurative use suggests circumvention rather than direct confrontation.
