embedded reporting
Reporting from within
Embedded reporting is journalism conducted from within a military unit or other organization, with the reporter traveling alongside and living among the group being covered.
The practice became prominent during the 2003 Iraq War, when journalists were assigned to specific units.
The arrangement grants intimate access but raises questions about objectivity: Critics argued embedded reporting produced coverage too sympathetic to the military.
