elusive creature
Rarely seen animal
An elusive creature is an animal that is difficult to find, observe, or capture—whether because it's rare, nocturnal, camouflaged, or simply wary of humans.
The phrase often carries a note of fascination or mystery: Bigfoot remains the most famous elusive creature in American folklore.
Scientists may spend years tracking elusive creatures like snow leopards or giant squid.
