earthen mounds
Dirt piled high
Earthen mounds are artificial hills built from soil, clay, or other earth materials.
Many were constructed by ancient peoples for burial, ceremony, or habitation—the mounds of the Mississippi Valley cultures being notable examples.
The term also applies to any deliberately shaped pile of earth: The landscapers created earthen mounds to add visual interest.
