ear ringing

Hearing without source

Ear ringing is a persistent sound heard in the ears without an external source—buzzing, humming, or high-pitched tones that only you can hear.

The medical term is tinnitus.

It can result from loud noise exposure, age-related hearing loss, or various medical conditions: The ear ringing after the concert lasted for hours.

Sometimes used loosely for any unexplained auditory sensation.
