dying in office
Term cut short
Dying in office means dying while holding an official position, usually political office.
The phrase appears most often in discussions of presidential succession, term limits, or the fates of long-serving officials: Four American presidents have been assassinated; four others died in office of natural causes.
It can apply to any officeholder who doesn't survive their term.
