drive back

Push the enemy

To drive back is to force someone or something to retreat or return to where they came from.

An army drives back invaders; a homeowner drives back intruders.

The phrase implies successful resistance against an advancing force: Firefighters managed to drive back the flames.

It can also simply mean to return by car: We drove back in silence.
