double indemnity

Twice the benefit

Double indemnity is a clause in life insurance policies that pays twice the face value if the policyholder dies by accident rather than illness or natural causes.

The term gained cultural currency from James M.

Cain's 1943 novel and its film adaptation, in which conspirators plot murder to collect the doubled payout: The policy included a double indemnity clause for accidental death.
