directional pads
Four-way navigation buttons
A directional pad—usually called a d-pad—is a flat, cross-shaped control on video game controllers, used to navigate menus or move characters in four or eight directions.
The design became standard with the Nintendo Entertainment System in the 1980s: Use the d-pad to scroll through your inventory.
Though analog sticks now handle most movement, d-pads remain essential for fighting games and retro-style titles.
