diem

Roman calendar unit

Diem appears almost exclusively in the Latin phrase per diem, meaning "by the day" or "for each day." A per diem is a daily allowance, typically for expenses like meals and lodging when traveling for work: The company offers a $75 per diem for business trips.

It can also describe payment or charges calculated on a daily basis: per diem rates at the hotel.

The word diem alone is rarely used in English outside this fixed expression.
