decommissioned ships
Fleet no longer
Decommissioned ships are naval vessels officially removed from active military service.
A ship is decommissioned when it's no longer needed, too costly to maintain, or outdated.
Decommissioned ships may be scrapped, sold, converted to museum ships, or mothballed in reserve fleets: The aircraft carrier was decommissioned after forty years of service.
The term sometimes extends to commercial vessels formally retired from operation.
