Diffusing the conflict
De-escalatory describes actions, words, or measures intended to reduce tension, conflict, or the intensity of a confrontation.
It is the opposite of escalatory and appears most often in diplomatic, military, and law enforcement contexts.
The president called for de-escalatory steps from both sides.
A de-escalatory approach might involve backing down from threats, withdrawing forces, or using calming language to defuse a volatile situation.
