curve grading
Relative score scaling
Curve grading is the practice of adjusting test scores relative to how the class performed, rather than against a fixed standard.
If everyone struggled, grades shift upward so the highest scorer might earn an A regardless of the raw percentage.
The practice can reward relative performance or compensate for an unusually difficult exam: The professor graded on a curve because the average was 52%.
