cross-fingering
Fingers layered over
Cross-fingering is a technique on woodwind instruments where fingers from both hands alternate in covering tone holes, rather than lifting sequentially from bottom to top.
This produces certain notes or chromatic pitches that standard fingering can't achieve.
The term also describes the hopeful gesture of crossing one's index and middle fingers for luck, though that's more commonly called crossing your fingers.
