counterdefenses

Shields against attacks

Counterdefenses are defensive measures taken against an attack that is itself defensive—defenses against defenses.

The term appears in military and strategic contexts where one side's protective measures prompt the other to develop ways around them, which then require their own countermeasures: The treaty limited not just missiles but counterdefenses designed to neutralize them.
