corner cases
Rare boundary conditions
Corner cases are unusual or extreme situations that occur at the boundaries of normal operation—where multiple conditions intersect or parameters hit their limits.
The term comes from engineering and software development, where a system might work fine in typical use but fail when inputs combine unexpectedly: The app crashes in corner cases involving empty fields and special characters.
Distinguished from edge cases, which involve single extremes rather than intersecting boundaries, though the terms are often used interchangeably.
