copyright renewal
Prolonging legal protection
Copyright renewal is the formal extension of copyright protection beyond its initial term.
Under older U.S. law, copyright lasted for an initial period and required renewal to continue; works whose copyrights weren't renewed entered the public domain.
The Copyright Act of 1976 eliminated renewal requirements for works created after 1978, making protection automatic for the author's lifetime plus additional years.
