consulting detective
Hired mystery solver
A consulting detective is an independent investigator who advises police or private clients on difficult cases, working outside official law enforcement.
The term is forever associated with Sherlock Holmes, who described himself this way in Conan Doyle's stories: When the police are out of their depth, they consult me.
Modern usage often echoes this literary origin.
