conserved sequences

Unchanged genetic regions

Conserved sequences are segments of DNA, RNA, or protein that remain nearly identical across different species or over evolutionary time.

When a sequence is highly conserved, it usually performs an essential function—mutations there tend to be harmful and get weeded out by natural selection.

Biologists use conserved sequences to identify genes, trace evolutionary relationships, and predict what unfamiliar stretches of genetic material might do: The gene's conserved sequence suggests it plays a critical role in cell division.
