confirmation test
Second diagnostic attempt
A confirmation test is a follow-up test performed after a preliminary screening test yields a positive result.
The initial screening may be fast and inexpensive but prone to false positives; the confirmation test uses more rigorous methods to verify the finding.
Common in drug testing, medical diagnostics, and laboratory analysis: The initial screening came back positive, but we're waiting on the confirmation test.
