community network
Neighborhood digital infrastructure
A community network is a telecommunications infrastructure owned and operated by local residents rather than commercial providers, typically serving rural or underserved areas where traditional internet service is unavailable or unaffordable.
The term also describes interconnected local organizations—nonprofits, churches, schools—that coordinate resources and services: The community network helped families find emergency housing.
In computing, early community networks were bulletin board systems connecting neighbors before the commercial internet.
