cold burn

Freeze-caused tissue damage

A cold burn is tissue damage caused by extreme cold rather than heat—from liquid nitrogen, dry ice, or frozen metal touching skin.

The injury resembles a heat burn: redness, blistering, and in severe cases, destruction of deeper tissue.

She got a cold burn from handling dry ice without gloves.

Also called a freeze burn or cryogenic burn.
