coinflip

Binary chance event

A coinflip is the act of tossing a coin and letting chance determine the outcome based on which side lands facing up.

Because a fair coin has only two equally likely outcomes—heads or tails—a coinflip has become the standard method for making a random binary decision or settling a dispute impartially.

We decided who would go first with a coinflip.

Figuratively, calling something a coinflip means the odds are roughly fifty-fifty.
