coal cellar

Underground fuel room

A coal cellar is an underground storage room for coal, typically beneath a house.

Before central heating became standard, homes kept coal supplies in cellars for feeding furnaces and fireplaces.

The term persists in British English for basement storage spaces even when no longer used for coal: The old coal cellar had been converted into a wine room.
