chewing cud
Cow's digestive habit
Chewing cud is the process by which ruminant animals—cows, sheep, goats, deer—rechew partially digested food regurgitated from the stomach.
The animal appears contemplative while doing this, which gives rise to the figurative sense: to chew one's cud is to think something over slowly and thoroughly, turning it over in the mind as a cow turns over its food.
