chairwarmer

Seat-filling nonworker

A chairwarmer is someone who occupies a position without doing meaningful work—they warm a chair but contribute little else.

The term is mildly disparaging, suggesting the person is redundant or unproductive: Half the department are chairwarmers collecting a paycheck.

Sometimes used self-deprecatingly: I'm just a chairwarmer until I figure out what I'm doing.
