caveating

Inserting conditional warnings

Caveating is the act of adding qualifications, warnings, or conditions to a statement.

Someone caveating their advice is hedging it with disclaimers: I'm caveating this heavily, but I think we should proceed.

The word comes from the legal term caveat (a formal warning) and has spread into business and academic speech, where caveating has become routine—sometimes excessively so.
