car hops
Tray-bearing waitstaff
Car hops are servers at drive-in restaurants who bring food to customers waiting in their parked cars.
The term evokes mid-twentieth-century American dining, when carhops—often on roller skates—delivered trays that hooked onto car windows.
The practice has largely disappeared, though a few drive-ins preserve the tradition: The carhop brought our burgers on a tray.
