canned heat
Portable cooking fuel
Canned heat is a fuel made from jellied alcohol, sold in small cans for portable cooking and heating—the kind used under chafing dishes or by campers.
The term also names a form of crude alcohol that desperate drinkers extracted from such fuel, straining it through bread to remove the jelling agent: He drank canned heat when he couldn't afford whiskey.
The blues band Canned Heat took their name from this practice.
