camping out

Tenting in wilderness

Camping out is spending the night outdoors, typically in a tent or under the stars, as a recreational activity: We're camping out by the lake this weekend.

The phrase also describes waiting somewhere for an extended period, often to secure a position: Fans were camping out for concert tickets.

To camp out can mean staying temporarily in makeshift conditions: I'm camping out on my sister's couch until I find a place.
