bump-starting

Clutch-pop engine revival

Bump-starting is a method of starting a vehicle with a dead battery by pushing it (or letting it roll downhill) while in gear, then releasing the clutch to force the engine to turn over.

Also called push-starting or pop-starting.

The technique works only with manual transmissions: We had to bump-start the old truck after the battery died.

Figuratively, bump-starting means getting something sluggish moving again: The tax cuts were meant to bump-start the economy.
