building footprint
Structure's land shadow
A building footprint is the outline of a structure where it meets the ground—the area a building occupies on its site.
Architects and planners use the term when calculating lot coverage or comparing how much land different designs require: The new library has a smaller footprint than the old one but adds square footage with a second story.
