built-up area

Developed land region

A built-up area is a zone where buildings and other structures are dense and continuous, as opposed to rural or undeveloped land.

The term appears in planning documents, traffic signs, and geographic descriptions: Speed limits are lower in built-up areas.

British English favors the phrase more than American English, where *developed area* or *urban area* often substitute.
