broken field

Dodging through tacklers

In American football, a broken field is an open area of the playing field where defenders are scattered rather than organized in formation, creating opportunities for a ball carrier to weave through: He made a spectacular broken-field run for sixty yards.

The term extends to any situation requiring nimble navigation through obstacles: broken-field driving through rush-hour traffic.
