brier

Prickly wild growth

A brier is a thorny shrub, especially wild roses or brambles, or a twig from such a plant.

The word appears in descriptions of overgrown land: The path was choked with briers.

Brier also names an unrelated shrub whose root is used to make tobacco pipes—a brier pipe.

Also spelled briar.
