boot scraper
Doorstep sole cleaner
A boot scraper is a metal device mounted near a doorway for scraping mud and dirt from the soles of boots before entering a building.
Common in the 19th century when unpaved streets were muddy, boot scrapers were often decorative iron fixtures set into door frames or steps: The old townhouse still has its original boot scraper by the front door.
