bone-shakers
Early jarring bicycles
Bone-shakers were early bicycles from the 1860s with wooden wheels and iron tires, notorious for their jarring ride on cobblestone streets.
The term now applies to any old, rickety vehicle that rattles uncomfortably: That old bus was a real bone-shaker.
The singular bone-shaker appears more often than the plural.
