body rocking

Repetitive torso movement

Body rocking is a repetitive, rhythmic movement of the torso—swaying forward and back or side to side.

It occurs naturally in infants and young children as self-soothing behavior.

In adults, body rocking may indicate anxiety, autism spectrum conditions, or other developmental differences.

The motion can also be deliberate, as in certain meditation practices or musical absorption: She was body rocking to the beat.
