blood groove

Sword's longitudinal depression

A blood groove is a narrow channel running along the flat of a blade, properly called a fuller.

The folk etymology holds that it lets blood flow or allows air in to break suction, but the actual purpose is to reduce weight while maintaining rigidity.

The term persists in knife and sword collecting despite being technically incorrect: The hunting knife has a blood groove running halfway down the blade.
