black witch

Large dark moth

A black witch is a large moth native to the Americas, with a wingspan up to seven inches and dark, mottled wings.

In folklore, particularly in Mexico and the Caribbean, its appearance is considered an omen of death or misfortune.

The term also describes a practitioner of dark or malevolent magic, as opposed to a white witch who practices benevolent magic: The villagers blamed the black witch for the failed harvest.
