black hound

A black hound is simply a hound with black or predominantly black coloring.

The phrase carries folkloric weight in British and Celtic tradition, where spectral black hounds—often with glowing eyes—appear as omens of death or guardians of supernatural boundaries: The black hound of the moors haunted travelers at night.

These legends inform fantasy literature and gaming, where black hounds typically signal danger or the uncanny.
