big brothers
Elder male siblings
Big brothers are older male siblings.
The term extends to mentorship relationships where men guide younger people, as in the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.
From Orwell's *1984*, Big Brother refers to an oppressive surveillance state or its figurehead: Big Brother is watching you.
The phrase now describes any invasive monitoring: These apps feel like big brother on your phone.
