better off

In improved circumstances

Better off describes a more favorable condition or situation than before or than an alternative.

Someone who is better off has improved circumstances, usually financial: After the inheritance, they were considerably better off.

The phrase also applies to nonmaterial advantages: You're better off without him.

It often appears in advice or judgment about what someone should do: We'd be better off leaving now.
