benevolent society
Mutual aid group
A benevolent society is an organization formed to provide mutual aid or charitable assistance to its members or community.
These groups historically offered benefits like sick pay, funeral expenses, or support for widows—functions later absorbed by insurance companies and government programs.
Many were organized around ethnic, religious, or occupational ties: the Hebrew Benevolent Society, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
