bearded ladies
Sideshow facial anomaly
Bearded ladies are women who grow visible facial hair, historically exhibited as curiosities in circus sideshows and freak shows during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The term carries associations with spectacle and exploitation, though some performers achieved celebrity status.
Today the phrase may refer to women with hirsutism or polycystic ovary syndrome, or to drag performers who incorporate facial hair into their acts.
