background elements
Behind the action
Background elements are the parts of a visual composition that appear behind the main subject, providing context, depth, or atmosphere without demanding primary attention.
In film and photography, background elements include scenery, extras, and set dressing.
In graphic design, they might be textures, patterns, or colors that support foreground content: The background elements were too busy and distracted from the logo.
The term extends to any secondary components that establish setting or mood while remaining subordinate to focal points.
